In 1903 in a city called Wonsan, the Holy Spirit began to kindle the hearts of a missionary and a small Korean congregation. (See the Korean Revival of 1907 for full article) A wave of Revival hit the city and hundreds were saved. Mighty manifestations of power were common place, healings, miracles, signs and wonders and the Holy Spirit swept southward throughout all of South Korea and even jumped offshore to the island of JeJe. Churches sprang up everywhere and were filled overnight. People were meeting together in their homes, and churches were praying together and having great expectations for more of His presence. It has been reported that millions of Christians were a result of that revival!
And one hundred years later, the wind of the Holy Spirit is moving again in a mighty way throughout the nation of South Korea. Many churches are wholeheartedly embracing this move of God, while others are cautiously watching. All over South Korea there is an emerging new thirst and hunger for the Lord and a new atmosphere of excitement and expectation. People who once gathered out of cultural obligation are now coming with a real hunger for more of Jesus.
I can hardly believe that it has been four years since my first visit to this amazing nation. It has been a privilege to discover the culture, the history, the country and to minister to thousands of Korean people. This past week I had the privilege to teach at the YWAM BEDTS School. This is a school specifically designed by YWAM Korea to facilitate an opportunity for the business community to attend four months of evening classes. The school is being attended by approximately 100 students and my topic for the week was “The Power and Presence of the Holy Spirit.” The week went very well, and the host pastor asked if we would open the meeting to the public for the Sunday night. The YWAM leadership agreed and so we extended an open invitation to bring the sick for the Sunday night meeting. With one day’s notice, approximately four hundred people came out!
When I arrived at the church for the Sunday night meeting, there was a flurry of excitement and many people ran over to the car to tell me what was already going on. The evening before, Saturday night, we had experienced a strong visitation of the Holy Spirit, and everyone was touched. 99% of the entire class was laid out on the floor, covered with modesty blankets, and we just waited on the Lord, with some soaking music in the background. Some people were very still, others were manifesting different physical things as the Lord was doing a deep work. Emotions were tender and the soft (and sometimes not so soft) cries of the people could be heard as the Holy Spirit came to minister, wave after wave of His presence. What we didn’t know, was that the Lord was also giving out gold fillings and gold caps on people’s teeth. They didn’t realize this had happened until the next morning when they were brushing their teeth!!!!
So when I arrived on Sunday evening, the place was buzzing with anticipation. The faith was rising and I knew Holy Spirit was preparing the environment to release His healing anointing and for two hours, people were being healed. As people came forward to give testimony, others would let out a scream or a laugh of excitement as they were also being healed during the time of giving testimony. Healings were happening so fast it was difficult to keep track, however the pastor’s wife managed to record over 100 healings!
Gently the Holy Spirit began to lift off the meeting and by 10 pm we knew it was time to close. As we prayed, gold dust appeared on the hands of many. The people left the meeting, chatting and laughing, and crying and giving hugs all around.
Is this renewal?? I think so! Is it revival?? I am not sure, I don’t think so …not yet - but hundreds of thousands of Korean Christians are crying out for the anointing of the Holy Spirit to overflow (once again) from the meetings into the streets and bring spiritual reformation to their nation. May it be so, Lord Jesus!
